Toilets are true comfort-zones, however a toilet-themed dinner is hard to imagine – Modern Toilet is a Taipei restaurant which proposes such an offer. The Modern Toilet inaugurated in 2004 by owner Wang Tzi-wei drew inspiration for the eatery from a Japanese cartoon featuring restroom images and the toilet themes with menus for food and drinks.
The restaurant accommodates 100 seats with each made from toilet bowls. The specialties at the restaurant accompany sink faucets and gender-coded “WC” signs that appear on the three-storey structure. The food is served in mini plastic toilet bowls. The toilet rolls that serve for wiping hand and mouth are hung above the tables, which may resemble glass-topped jumbo bathtubs.
The crowded eatery appeals to a sizable young enthusiast, especially students from the three universities near the facility who admire a toilet theme. The managers of the restaurant explain for Modern’s popularity as increasing appreciation for theme eateries among Taipei customers, which reflects their urge for creative dining.
