The glistening white sands of New Mexico, one of the world’s great natural wonders has taken the whole world by surprise. Rising straight from the heart of Tularosa basin, at the northern end of Chihuahuan Desert, you would find these great glistening white sands embracing you in great style. Engulfing 275 square miles of desert, this world’s largest gypsum dune field not only preserves a major portion of dune field but also provides great scope for trekking enthusiasts.
Compared to Great Sand Dune National Park, white sands’ gypsum dune is not only easy to climb but also makes trekking across large areas bit easy. The mesmerizing white dunes seem ever changing – they grow, crest, slump but always advance slowly but relentlessly.
The rain and the snow that fall in the surrounding mountains dissolve gypsum from the rocks and carry it into Tularosa basin. The common mineral gypsum is rarely found in the form of sand because of its solubility. With no outlet to the sea, water flowing into the Tularosa basin either sinks into the ground or pools up in low spots. With evaporation of water, the dissolved gypsum is deposited on the surface.
